Adult Circumcision

Circumcision involves removing the foreskin, which is the skin around the head of the penis. This is often done just after birth. Some men who did not have circumcision at birth may develop recurrent infections (balanoposthitis), tightness of the skin preventing retraction (phimosis) or tightness preventing the skin from returning to it’s natural position (paraphimosis). Medications are often used to see if they can treat the problem. If they fail then options would include circumcision or a dorsal slit (partial circumcision or making an incision at the top portion of the penis to allow more normal movement).

An adult circumcision is usually done with IV sedation and a nerve block. It takes about 30 minutes to complete the procedure. The sutures are absorbable and will fall out on their own. It is an outpatient procedure and aside from avoiding erections for about a month the recovery is very quick.
